A little look into when you may choose to capture your newborn & what you can expect from each timescale.
Every mother’s favourite saying is ‘where does time go?’ Whether they are referring to the vanishing hours within their day or looking back at photos & remarking on how they have blinked & now have a seven year old. When your name changes to mummy (or daddy) you no longer have time on your hands but with a little forward planning you can have it on your side!
When you imagine your bundle of newborn joy pictured to perfection, how do they look?
SLEEPY | CURLED UP | PEACH-FUZZED
For those scrunched up, sleepy style shots the ideal age is 7-14 days old, because at this stage they are more curled up from being in the womb & are usually easier to move from pose to pose without waking. I would suggest booking in advance (any time after your 20 week scan) for around 7 days after your due date. As we know, very few babies are actually born on their due date, so if little one makes their appearance early or is late to the party, we can change the date of your shoot. I will always leave enough space in my diary to accommodate this.
MORE AWAKE | BEGINNING TO STRETCH | FILLING OUT
If you want to preserve the feeling of looking into your newborn’s eyes for the first time then it may be best to wait until 3-5 weeks after they are born. At this point they are usually still flexible enough to move into curled up poses but are more likely to wake up at some point during the shoot, so we can see those beautiful eyes and capture those adorable stretches & yawns!
AWAKE | WIDE EYED | UNCURLED IN ALL THEIR GLORY
If those first few weeks are too precious to share & you like the idea of adjusting to life with your newborn before venturing out for a photoshoot, then please feel free to book a shoot 5+ weeks after your baby has been welcomed into the world. At this stage we are sure to get some awake shots during your shoot. It’s less about baby on the bean bag and more about capturing them in your arms and that connection between you. If we’re lucky we may even capture those first smiles too!
